The INTECOCIS Scientific Mornings have restarted in 2017

The INTECOCIS scientific half day meetings has started again in 2017 (see calendar). The ISMs (INTECOCIS Scientific Mornings) gather researchers in the fields of acoustics and combustion instabilities for 3 hours to discuss various topics in those domains and create strong interactions. Researchers come from CERFACS and IMFT.

Pr Thierry Schuller joining IMFT in 2017

Dr Thierry Schuller (Centralesupelec and EM2C) has joined the PSC group at IMFT in January 2017. He is professor at Université Paul Sabatier where he will teach. His research will continue to focus on combustion instabilities, the leading theme of the ERC INTECOCIS. Pr Thierry Schuller has been one of the main actors in the field of combustion instabilities over the last 15 years with his colleagues at EM2C. His arrival at IMFT is a great addition to the INTECOCIS activities.

The Hottel lecture in Seoul (36th Symp. (Int.) on Comb.)

The most prestigious lecture in the field of combustion, the Hottel lecture, was given by T. Poinsot in Seoul, Korea in July 2016. The topic was combustion instabilities in real engines and some of the results correspond to INTECOCIS research. This lecture was the opening session in the Symposium (International) on Combustion which takes place every two years and gathers 1400 scientists from the whole world. The Symposium is also the only Symposium in this field which is referenced by Web of Science as a refereed journal with an acceptance rate of the order of 36 percent. The only French professor ever invited for a Hottel lecture was Pr Sébastien Candel (Ecole Centrale Paris) in 2004.The full lecture can be seen here:

INTECOCIS plenary presentation at the APS meeting in San Francisco

Thermoacoustics will be the main topic of the presentation given by Dr T. Poinsot during one of the eight plenary sessions of the  next American Physical Society meeting (http://apsdfd2014.stanford.edu) in San Francisco (November 23rd-25th). This is a great opportunity to show some of the achievements reached during the first 18 months of the project.

9th PRACE call award: 80 million hours!

A joint proposal by EM2C, CERFACS and IMFT was awarded 80 million core hours on the BlueGene Q Fermi machine (CINECA, Italy) for the « Large-eddy simulation of a meso-scale rocket engine with self-sustained combustion instability ».

This large amount of computer resources will be used to carry out the first unsteady simulation of a full rocket engine, from the inlet of the injection manifolds, through 42 coaxial injectors and all the way to the outlet of the nozzle. On top of the HPC challenge, the scientific objective is to gain insight into the mechanisms that drive rocket engines into transverse combustion instabilities.

The INTECOCIS program dedicates a full-time postdoctoral fellow (Annafederica Urbano) to this ground-breaking simulation.

CRCT Day at Ecole Centrale Paris March 27th, 2014

The CRCT (Centre de Recherche sur la Combustion Turbulente) gathers more than 100 experts in the field of turbulent combustion every year since 1992. This one-day workshop will take place on March 27th, 2014 at Ecole Centrale de Paris. It is organized jointly by CERFACS, IFP Energies Nouvelles and EM2C. It will be hosted by the EM2C laboratory.

Please mark this date. The program will be announced here soon. The meeting starts at 9 am and ends at 5.30 pm.

The Intecocis Scientific Afternoons (ISA)

More than twenty researchers will be working on thermoacoustics and combustion noise at IMFT and CERFACS after october 1st, 2013. In addition to the training sessions provided by CERFACS on LES in general, the INTECOCIS project will provide continuous training to IMFT and CERFACS members working specifically on thermoacoustics and combustion noise. These afternoons called ISA (Intecocis Scientific Afternoons) will typically last 3 hours and allow direct interactions between all INTECOCIS researchers.

The ISA schedule is available in the Calendars section. The first session took place on November 29th. It corresponded to a portion of  the course on combustion instabilities given at Princeton in June 2013 by Dr T. Poinsot. The following session will be dedicated to the IMFT experiment on thermoacoustics (laminar flame) in December (Dec. 13 at 2 pm at IMFT). In January 2014, the ISA session will focus on instabilities in rocket engines while the February one will discuss all tools available in the AVBP and AVSP codes, specifically needed to compute instabilities. In March, transverse and longitudinal modes will be considered.

Combustion courses at CEFRC (Princeton)

In June 2013, a specific course on combustion, organized by CEFRC,http://www.princeton.edu/cefrc/ took place at Princeton and Dr Poinsot presented multiple lectures dedicated to combustion instabilities. CEFRC (Combustion Energy Frontier Research Center) is organized by Pr C.K. Law (Princeton) and organizes courses for PhD students and engineers, both in the USA and in China and is an excellent formation path for all researchers interested in combustion science. This year, lectures were given at Princeton by prs Pilling, Hanson, Poinsot and Matalon. More information is available on the web site of CEFRC.

All lectures have been recorded and can be seen on youtube here.

INTECOCIS granted with an INP INNOV' prize : click through for video

INP INNOV' rewards each year several investigators for publications, major partnership with companies or global scale research projects. The INTECOCIS project has been awarded one of these prizes on June 12th, during the 2013 INP INNOV' ceremony. A short video documentary (in French) has been made for the occasion :

INTECOCIS Recruitment started

The recruitment of INTECOCIS researchers has started. More than 10 scientists will be hired at IMFT and CERFACS during the 5 year project.  Application procedures are described in the Open Positions section.

In February 2013, the first PhD student working for INTECOCIS has been selected and recruited at IMFT: Tom Goutines (Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace) will work on LES of combustion instabilities for the next three years. Emilien Courtine  (Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace)  also started his PhD in April. Another PhD student, Maxence Brebion (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan) will begin his PhD in September 2013. Annafederica Urbano (La sapienza) will begin her post doctoral work on rocket combustion in October 2013.

Candidates for INTECOCIS  have excellent resumes, confirming the attractivity of ERC programs at the world level.

A new visualization server for INTECOCIS researchers

IMFT has bought a new visualization system for INTECOCIS ERC members.

The bottleneck of present combustion simulations is often the capacity to preprocess (mesh generation) and post process (visualization) simulation results. The new system, bought in February 2013, should make these tasks easier: a Dell machine equipped with 512Gb of memory has been installed and made available for INTECOCIS members.
